From July 25 to August 1, 2025, the Lake Chad Basin Conservation Project team carried out a mission in Chari-Baguirmi province to build the capacities of groups and associations benefiting from micro-grants in Mandelia and Maïlao. The training sessions focused on using new equipment (smokers, dryers, and oil presses) and on sustainable farming practices such as biopesticides, composting, and nursery techniques.
These sessions enabled members to adopt modern fish preservation methods while reducing the workload associated with peanut oil production—all in an environmentally friendly way. The introduction of biopesticides, composting, and nursery techniques also equipped participants with practical tools to promote sustainable agriculture and safeguard local biodiversity.
Village groups and associations are key drivers of rural development and improved community livelihoods. By providing technical guidance and appropriate equipment, the project is opening up new economic opportunities, strengthening food security, and supporting more sustainable farming practices.
In total, ten beneficiary groups received support within the Ramsar site: six in Mandelia and four in Maïlao. Members expressed their satisfaction with both the training and the equipment provided, which they believe will help them increase production and raise household incomes.
The Lake Chad Basin Conservation Project is funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Alinea International, in collaboration with the Lake Chad Basin Commission and several partners.
