As part of the Lake Chad Basin Conservation Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), Diane Briand, Senior Program Officer for the Sahel region at GAC, and the Alinea International project team conducted a monitoring mission from March 17 to 19, 2025, in Maroua, Cameroon.
The objective of this mission was to assess the progress made by the project as it nears the end of its second year of implementation and to meet with local institutions and community partners.
In addition to holding a working session with the Alinea team at the project office in Maroua, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Maroua and the Sub-Prefect. Following this visit, the delegation gave an interview to the press on the objectives of GAC’s visit to Cameroon. The delegation also visited the agro-pastoral rehabilitation site in Guirvidig. Mrs. Briand had a discussion with the Ministry of Agriculture’s focal point on issues related to rehabilitation, ecology, and the economy. In Maga, she visited the nursery that will provide seedlings for the rehabilitation of degraded sites. This visit served as an opportunity for the delegation to meet with the local Water and Forests Department to discuss the importance of tree seedling production in the fight against climate change and desertification.
Finally, the delegation visited the women’s group benefiting from the project’s micro-grant program. Women from various groups in Maga had the chance to interact with the delegation and showcase their activities in animal feed production. The delegation thanked the women’s group for their commitment to the project and emphasized the essential role women play in the socio-economic development of Cameroon.
