In the context of the biophysical assessment of wetlands and the identification of areas to be restored within the beneficiary communities, the technical team with the Lake Chad Basin Conservation project, responsible for the “restoration and rehabilitation” component of the project in Chad conducted a visit to the RAMSAR sites in the Salamat and Batha provinces from July 14 to 24, 2024. Key project partners, including the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the Environmental Services through the RAMSAR Convention focal point, and representatives from “ l’Organisation Sauvons les Lac Tchad” (OSLT), accompanied the Alinea team in these two provinces.
The main objective of this activity was to collect and analyze data on the biophysical conditions of the affected wetlands. The project team identified areas to be restored among the target communities and their partners, began collecting primary biophysical data to establish a typology for mapping the wetlands, and conducted geospatial analyses to document and map potential restoration areas within the intervention site.
As a result of the biophysical assessment, several discussions and debate sessions took place with the involved communities and their representatives, including active groups of farmers, herders, and fishers in these two provinces.
